Picture This: Visual Supports For Children With Autism
My students need printer, ink and velcro to be able to use pictures to enhance communication, language development and promote independence and build their self confidence.
My students have autism. They learn very differently from any other children. They are highly visual and kinesthetic learners. They love to move and explore around the classroom. Learning for them has to be fun and engaging. Using textured materials, realia and manipulatives help them enjoy learning reading, writing as well as math.
My students love to learn.
They try their very best to be in school everyday. Their parents are our partners, without their help we would never be where we are at right now.
My students are integrated everyday with their non disabled peers and they are well respected and loved by our school community.
My Project
My students need a printer and ink so that we will be able to produce pictures for them. I present my lessons to them using pictures.
My students with Autism are visual learners.
They use pictures to communicate simple needs like going to the bathroom, going to our sensory area, wanting to eat and wanting to take a break. Pictures in a way promote independence for my students by being able to communicate their needs and having their needs heard and met.
The dough set and the jumbo nuts and bolts will also help them to be able to develop their fine motor skills needed for writing and cutting activities which are basic skills they need to learn in class.
The headphones and the privacy boards will be used to minimize distraction in the classroom when we are working. The hold a ring walking rope is essential for my students to be able to learn how to walk and to be able to stay together while walking in line to different parts of the campus.
