Parents at my school want desperately to help their children with their homework!
I am an English as a Second Language teacher in a predominantly Vietnamese speaking community. This is a second year high need charter school in an area affected by natural disasters.
Many of the parents at our school do not speak very much English. Almost all of the parents of my students speak very little English. This means that kindergarten and first-grade students often come in with incomplete homework because there is nobody at home that can help them understand the English words.
One involved parent showed me a bilingual picture dictionary that a previous school had given their family. The family had been using the dictionary to help the child complete all of his homework.
All of my students who cannot yet read for themselves need this resource at home so that they can continue working on the literacy and English skills at home that we are developing in the classroom. In addition, the dictionaries will provide an English learning experience for the families and link them into what is happening in the classroom for their children.
