"What's a Knuffle Bunny?" Almost inevitably little hands shoot up into the air and mouths open to ask this question every (first) time I have read this book. It was no exception this year, as a new group of kids discovered the world of Trixie and her favorite stuffed animal. What’s even more special is that the story takes place where we live in Park Slope, Brooklyn. The barrier free setting of PS 10 has made my few years of teaching interesting, sometimes crazy, but always deeply rewarding. For two years, I was the general education teacher in a second grade inclusive setting. Now in my third year at the school, I am on my own with a terrific bunch of second graders in a general education class. In "Knuffle Bunny", author and illustrator Mo Willems creates wonderful images by superimposing hand-drawn characters over black and white photographs of neighborhood landmarks and establishments. The kids really love the illustrations and pointed out right away how cool it was that there were both photos and drawings. They got especially excited when they spotted places they had been themselves, ie. Prospect Park, etc. Hearing them discuss the book was super-inspiring and it would be awesome if each student could create his or her own text---Knuffle Bunny style. This would not only fit perfectly into our Mentor Author literacy unit but tie in our social studies curriculum as well---New York City! All that is needed is good weather for the neighborhood walk (provided by Mother Nature), a little imagination and hard work (provided by the kids), a working printer and copy machine (provided by the school), and disposable cameras (provided by you)!!! Oh, and Mo Willems also writes about a talking pigeon who eats hot dogs and drives buses. But that’s another project… Thank you for taking the time to read this proposal.
