My Project

My students are learning to express themselves in English, but writing can be overwhelming—especially when they don’t yet have all the words they need. What if, instead of starting with sentences, they could start with color, texture, and pictures?

Inspired by Beth Olshansky’s article “The Universal Language of Pictures: A Critical Tool for Advancing Student Writing,” I’m launching a junk journaling project for my multilingual learners.

Junk journals—handmade, mixed-media notebooks—will allow students to collect and create with found materials, images, and drawings. These visual entries will then serve as springboards into writing, helping students connect ideas, build vocabulary, and gain confidence as authors. This approach honors students’ diverse voices and makes writing feel creative, not intimidating.

My classroom includes English learners who have been in the United States for about two years. They are Spanish speakers from all over Mexico, Central and South America. Each student has their own background, culture, and point of view of the world. I want to help them tell their stories while learning language and building literacy.
