Our school is in a high risk area of the city. We are Title I school and over 100% of our students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. Our families struggle every day just to provide the basics for their children. Our school has a very high population of English Language Learners and many of our parents are also just beginning to learn English. Our school makes every effort to assist families with everything from food and clothing to supplies and transportation.
My students are eager to learn and enjoy coming to school every day.
These children just need a little extra attention to achieve at the level that is now expected by the new Common Core Standards. Providing them with opportunities to explore, collaborate, and learn is essential for their academic success.
My Project
The Selphy Printer will be used to display learning moments, achievements, and for organizational purposes. I will use photos to teach students about how we make inferences. Students will work in small groups to make observations, list schema (background knowledge) and then make inferences. To help with organizing our classroom we can use photos to label the things that students use every day, like book boxes and cubbies.
Photos make fantastic writing prompts.
I will find photos online and give each student a photo. Then have them write a descriptive, narrative or persuasive essay based on their image.
The printer will also allow us to personalize projects like Mother's Day cards or Thanksgiving time capsules.
