Picture Perfect Geometry in Our World

My 40 students need 10 automatic point and shoot cameras, white copy paper, sliding bar report covers, and compass and protractor sets for a culminating geometry project.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Cole's classroom raised $519

This project is fully funded

Architects provide it, and we will find it. The geometry in our world surrounds us daily if we just pay attention to the details of objects around us. I teach mathematics to two fifth grade classes. The school I teach in is located in a high need community where many of my children live with foster parents, grandparents, single parents, and/or two parent low income families. I strive to take the mathematics in the textbooks into the world of and around the children in my care. They have to make a connection in order to be successful and enjoy their learning of mathematics.

My students will have an opportunity to see their city's downtown area as well as their immediate neighborhoods from a completely different prospective - geometrically. The resources that it will take for us to accomplish this are not available through the school or the families of the students. Geometry is an area of mathematics they generally enjoy, but this project will allow us the opportunity to take it outside the classroom and see it up close and personal.

The students will tour their downtown and neighborhood area looking for predetermined geometry (i.e., angles, polygons, solid figures) that architects use when designing buildings, monuments and other objects for a given community. When they find the geometry they will use the cameras(approx. two pairs of students will share cameras) to capture the objects on film. The film will be developed and the students with their partner will attach the pictures onto plain white paper. The students will use the protractors and compasses to measure and identify angles and other geometric ideas that may be embedded in their photographs. The students will label each picture with a description of the geometry that they identified in their photograph. This project will take what students have learned in the textbooks and allow them to apply it to their world outside of the classroom. What good is textbook knowledge if it can't be applied elsewhere?

Your help will ensure that my students are given the opportunity to apply their textbook knowledge to the world around them. Who knows, there may be a future architect in the midst.
