Picture Our History: African- American History Through Picture Books
Help me give my students books offering glimpses into people and events in African American history. Each gives compelling insight into an array of aspects from the struggle for freedom and equality to the right to basic literacy.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students proudly come from very diverse backgrounds. We are a predominantly African American and Hispanic population, with over 18% English Language Learners and 67% participating in the county's free and reduced meal program.
As an International Baccalaureate school offering the Middle Years Programme, our middle school continually strives to help each student become an independent, open-minded inquirer and risk-taker with a growth mindset.
Our students relish opportunities to stretch their creative muscles, rise to academic challenges, and express themselves uniquely.
My Project
Nearly every student at this middle school will participate in a multi-faceted unit that begins in February, which is Black History Month.
Through the exploration of well-reviewed and award-winning picture books, students will deepen their understanding of an event, person, or idea in African American history.
Throughout the month of February and March, they will use the picture books as a springboard to a more in-depth research project. March will bring the use of various poetry writing techniques to further explore the themes encountered in the picture books. The culmination of these two months of work will be a school-wide literacy and poetry performance event.
