Don't let the poverty level or lack of community stability fool you, these kids are hard at work mastering academic content and applying that knowledge to the world around them! They rarely have access to computers and cameras through their homes, but LOVE working with technology. Our school earned an award for making great gains on the state test this past year. They are a hard working, fun loving group of kids.

My kids and I have juggled my personal camera, their parents' cameras, other teachers' cameras and then some this year in order to complete tasks the kids set for themselves. For example, when we worked on living biographies, the kids wanted a PowerPoint with a picture of them dressed as their assigned figure embedded into the production. When we started our worm composting bin, the kids photographed each step of the process and put together slide shows to introduce the concept to others. They used pictures they'd taken to create three panel brochures describing the impact composting can have on the world. That being said, only a few kids were able to document the processes because we only had one borrowed camera.

If our class had access to three digital cameras for student use, their ability to document and share their learning would take off. I imagine them capturing science labs, documenting the growth of plants in our vegetable garden, creating PowerPoints of their researched topics, and going all out to communicate their perspectives. They would also be able to capture those all important memories of their fourth grade friends for a year end celebration slide show.

By sponsoring this project, you'll provide students access to a digital media that they will not have any other way. You'll open the door to their creativity and expression! I imagine this opportunity moving into visual arts as students play around with what to put in the frame and the impact those choices have on the viewers. I'd love to see my kids put together a slide show each grading period that encapsulates their learning and experiences at school. Reflection is an important part of the learning process and photographing the events would facilitate that further.
