My goal each year is to create a classroom of readers. I believe that by reading aloud daily helps my students foster a love of reading. These read alouds also act as a springboard for higher-level thinking and discussions.
In my urban school, reading is our central focus.
Our 4th and 5th grade team plans our reading lessons around picture books that can help the students learn how to infer, draw conclusions, determine themes, understand character motivation... This higher-level thinking is imperative if our students are going to grow into real readers.
My Project
Each week my class focuses on one comprehension strategy or skill that is essential to becoming a real reader. In order to introduce these skills and "practice" our higher-level thinking, we read a lot of picture books. We attend school for 180 days. I try to read aloud a picture book daily. That means we need at least 180 quality picture books. I've selected picture books that are certain to become favorites and will help students find a love of reading.
By donating to this project, you will help foster a love of reading and help improve students' abilities to think at a new, higher level.
The books I selected are sure to be treasured and will be read for years to come. Thank you in advance for your support.
