This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"That's what the best books do. They make you think, and rethink how you see yourself, others, and the world. Most of all, they make you feel. Feelings toward people who aren't like you. Feelings you didn't know you had." This passage from "Starfish" written by Lisa Fipps highlights the transformative power of books as a tool for self reflection and development.

My students are book-loving, avid readers, and enthusiastic learners.

Students at my school are inquisitive, compassionate, and creative. As English language learners, books are so important to my students and are truly valued. I am the librarian at a K-8 elementary school in an urban area that has been especially hard-hit by COVID-19 and other challenges. Our school library is an essential resource for my students. There is a buzz about books and an excitement for reading in our school.

My Project

This project will add 56 picture books with a focus on social-emotional learning to our school library. My students learned remotely from spring 2020 until August 2021. After almost a year and a half of remote learning and the continued prevalence of COVID-19, my students continue to face many challenges and are navigating a multitude of emotions, fears, and stressors. It is crucial to help all students when it comes to their emotions and interactions with their peers.

Now more than ever it is essential to provide my students with the resources they need to continue to succeed in their education.

Picture books open our imagination, deliver important and impactful messages in an accessible format, and spark a joy of learning and a love of reading in all students. These picture books were carefully selected based on the needs and interests of my students. With themes of regulating emotions, recognizing feelings, and sharing positive affirmations, these picture books will be used to support my students' social and emotional learning.
