Picture Books Supporting Deaf Students' Language and Storytelling

Help me give my students wordless picture books that enable my students to explore vocabulary, language, and storytelling from books that portray everyday experiences, cultural diversity, and special holidays.

My Students

Many of my students have specialized language needs including explicit language instruction in social and academic language. At the same time, there are also students that I serve that have more typical reading and writing skills, which I also strive to expand and build on their skills to ready them for the world beyond high school. I provide speech-language services to deaf and hard of hearing students of various ages, grades, English language levels, and exposure to education.

My students need a new mix of language therapy resources to create engagement, diversity and variety in weekly lessons for several grade bands.

My Project

Wordless picture books are powerful literacy tools. Without relying on text, students can freely look at illustrations to explore the scenes and focus on the stories. This creates engaging opportunities to work on vocabulary development, story structure, sequencing, character dialogue, and storytelling skills. My students will be able to connect with these books as they include ethnic diversity, urban life, holidays, as well as cultural foods and celebrations. These books will also spark additional personal experiences to share with one another. We will be building expressive and receptive language skills in ASL, written English and spoken English.
