Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a kindergarten teacher in Chicago Public Schools, I work in a neighborhood with a diverse population of immigrants. My students come from many cultural, ethnic, and language backgrounds.
My students are loving, energetic people in need of an environment that is easy to navigate, and tools that are organized and easy to use.
Most of my students are English Language Learners, and a high percentage (30%) of my students have special needs. Their year in my kindergarten classroom is often their first formal education experience, and it is my goal to make the social, academic, and English learning process as smooth as possible for them.
My Project
My classroom library is finally organized just the way I like it! But my book bins are in a sorry state. They are falling apart and uncoordinated . As our school prepares to become a dual language school, I am coordinating my picture book bins to be color coded according to Spanish and English texts.
These bins will allow me to order my classroom library in a way that helps students navigate the library and choose the books that are right for them.
The easier it is for them to find the books they love, the more they will read!
