Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are energetic and resilient middle school students who are getting ready for high school and beyond. They are curious, passionate and full of life. Many of our students face difficulties such as trauma, poverty, and come from neighborhoods with high levels of crime. Some are newcomers to this country and many are second language learners. The majority are Latino and African American.

As a teacher-librarian, it is a priority for me to help my students find that book that speaks to them, inspires them and changes them.

I firmly believe that there is a life-changing book out there for everyone. Reading will help my students reach their goals and meet their potential in life. I have the opportunity to support literacy programs at the school, promote reading, advocate for students, and work with teachers and students to support and enrich students' learning.

My Project

Our current picture book collection is very outdated and in poor condition. It is not serving the needs of those students who benefit most from the picture books.

Students at my school deserve to have new, engaging and accessible books.

This project will provide those students the books they need to enjoy the library and activities in the library. I plan to use the books for story times and during library visits. The students can also check out a book to take home as well if they would like. Additionally, their teacher will be able to check out the books for classroom usage. Finally, picture books can be enjoyed by all ages and will be available for all students and staff in the school.
