My Students

Students from preschool to sixth grade are transitioning back to full time in person learning at our small, rural community school after a year of remote and/or hybrid instruction.

Like all children, many of our students have experienced unexpected hardship over the past year, but show resiliency due to the strength of their community, and a school wide emphasis on developing and supporting social and emotional skills.

My Project

Just before the pandemic, our school adopted the Choose Love for Schools curriculum to support the social emotional learning of all students from preschool to sixth grade. This school year, the Choose Love lessons have been taught remotely to students by the school psychologist and school counseling intern. The curriculum has been integral in building and giving children reassurance and concrete tools to help them through difficult times.

We are proud to be building a school culture of resilience using the Choose Love ingredients of Courage, Gratitude, Forgiveness, and Compassion in Action.

The picture books that we are requesting for this project align to these themes and teach social and emotional skills in a child friendly way.

There is no cost associated with Choose Love, and while our school community was learning remotely, we were able to draw from the program's free online resources. A core component of each lesson across the grade spans is a high quality picture book that embodies one of the components of Choosing love. While we have thus far taken advantage of Youtube videos of picture books being read aloud, now that students are returning to school full time in person, we are looking forward to getting away from screens and working in classrooms (and outdoor learning spaces) to enjoy traditional read alouds again. This wish list of books will afford us that experience!

In addition to classroom read alouds, this list of books includes several psychoeducation titles designed to teach students about common childhood mental health challenges including attention problems, anxiety and depression. These books will be used by school counseling staff to teach individuals and small groups how to prevent and manage these challenges.
