Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a first grade teacher in the South Bronx in a Title I school with 100% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch. Last year, the majority of my children came to my class on Pre-Kindergarten reading and writing levels. Through the generous donations of previous DonorsChoose grants, I was able to make significant academic gains with my students. This year I hope to do the same!
Last year I spent a lot of the time making my own books for our classroom library. While I think that they have helped my students, nothing can replace the learning that is acquired from colorful picture books. For my students who are reading on lower level, I think it would be amazing to have some new books at their level. Of the few picture books that I bought last year, I found that using them to teach my lower level students really increased their reading fluency and also improved their writing. The books allow my students to match the pictures with the words, the first step toward becoming a reader.
Using these books would dramatically help my students become better readers and writers! Thank you! .
