Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach Kindergarten at an urban public school in Illinois. We have 34 Kindergarteners in our classroom. Almost all of my students speak English as their second language and most are bilingual in English and Spanish. All of my students receive a free breakfast, that we eat in the classroom each morning, and most students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

My Kindergarteners are at the beginning of their formal education and are developing their early reading and writing skills. It will benefit them they are able to develop reading and writing skills in both English and Spanish. However, we need more English-Spanish resources in our classroom to support them!

I am asking for pictionaries, Spanish-English dictionaries, Spanish-English labels and Spanish-English puzzles to help my students develop their early reading and writing skills! I have a few pictionaries and Spanish-English dictionaries that the students love to use to help them during Writer's Workshop. Although "a few" is not enough for 34 eager Kindergarteners. If we had a variety of pictionaries and dictionaries the students would be able to develop their vocabularies and enhance their writing and spelling skills! The students also frequently ask for the names of items in our classroom to be translated. I have made labels for many items but the students need more. Classroom labels would allow them to independently read and write about objects in our classroom. Finally, Kindergarteners learn best through hands on activities and that is why I have asked for Spanish-English floor puzzles for them to play with during center time. Although they will be playing they will also be developing their reading skills.
