Help me give my students a picnic table for outdoor learning, water cooler, to stay hydrated, cups to drink, cart for garden tools and gloves to use for gardening/messy science experiments/fun.

My Students

Our school is located in the inner city with underprivileged families striving for a better life. Single parents, grandparents, and older siblings continue to do their very best to instill a better way of living for their families. They face many challenges, but that doesn't impede them from wanting to learn or stop them from dreaming big.

We are 95% African American, 2% Haitian American, 2% Hispanic and 1% Caucasian, with 97% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch.

Teachers create a safe, fun, and empowering classroom for our students to help them thrive in all areas of their lives. I love my students and spend most of my out-of-the-classroom time developing projects to enhance their learning and well-being.

My Project

COVID continues to be an issue for our school and an outdoor classroom would help solve some of the problems we’re facing: space to provide in-person instruction now that social distancing guidelines call for at least six feet of space between people; fresh air and ventilation (transmission from coronavirus is less likely outdoors than indoors); and expanded access to in-person instruction, especially for disadvantaged students. These tables will allow students to sit outside socially distanced and surrounded by fresh air. There’s also an intrinsic value to being outdoors: it’s good for students’ social, emotional, and mental well-being. Additionally, the table will be used by a large afterschool program for first through eighth-grade students which includes dance, drama, sports, gardening, drumming, and chess.

Fresh air and plenty of water are two ways I want to keep these students healthy.

Since COVID-19 hit Miami-Dade we are not allowed to use our school's water fountains, so staying hydrated has been a problem for everyone at Lillie C. Evans K-8 Center. Here is our situation, we are thirsty really thirsty.

Finally, we need a garden cart to move our tools and supplies back and forth from one part of the building to the other.
