Picking Up STEAM and Getting Animated

My students need these tablet stands in order to learn the fundamentals of animation so they can turn narratives they create into movies, collaboratively.

My Students

My students love to create stories. We tell stories from our lives, stories from history, and stories we invent ourselves. Turning them into a movie so that they can be shared with others would be a great way to make these stories come to life!

As a part of this project, students will learn to take the narratives they write so well, story-board them, and then turn them into short stop-animated movies using paper backgrounds and both paper and 3D animated characters.

To do this work, they will work in small-group teams, collaborating and sharing their ideas. They will use their creativity, finding ways to incorporate humor, add thought-provoking details, and stimulate interest in their peers who view these animations as well--all while delighting in the joys of digital technology! We will end with a "film festival" where we get to see one another's movies displayed on a big screen and talk about the insights we gained as we went through the process of creating this artwork--from an artistic, technological, and interpersonal standpoint.

My Project

The iPad stands will help students keep the iPads they will use to take stop animation photos at just the perfect distance away from the paper backgrounds they created, allowing these young animators to move their characters without worrying about moving the camera out of position. The fact that these stands are portable, will make it easy for them to work at various places around the room and collaborate with one another at tables, rather than needing to cluster around a wired document camera attached to a computer. The iPad stands are also useful for multiple purposes. When they are not being used for animation, they can also be used to help students to share their daily writing--showing their actual writing as they talk through their decisions about what to write, how to write it, and how they edited it. Maybe some of these narratives they share will eventually turn into new stop animation ideas!

My students love to tell stories...but it is more challenging for them to write them down.

By getting the chance to animate narratives, using these iPad stands, they will be motivated to amp up their writing while they also learn collaboration skills and get to express their ideas in their own unique, artistic style. They will never forget the lessons they learn as they embark on these animated projects!
