My Students
“I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.” ― Thomas Edison
It might be hard to imagine but my special education students have so much in common with Edison; they understand what it means to persevere in the face of failure and constantly stay positive.
I have the privilege of working with kids who come to me every day knowing they’re going work, they’re going to stumble, but they’re going to learn.
They do it with a smile on their face because eventually they get their “light bulb” moment. The moment when their faces light up with the pride of understanding and success, it’s amazing to see. My Edisons come from diverse and varied backgrounds, but despite these challenges, they don’t fail. They find 10,000 ways to learn.
My Project
My school is trying to improve the sensory and emotional health of our students through the creation of a multi-sensory room. This room will provide students with disabilities or sensory impairments opportunities to learn and interact in a controlled and calming environment. In order to achieve our goal we want to give students the chance to try a variety of sensory tools so they can determine which materials work best for their self-regulating needs.
Through your generous donations, my students will have access to the tools necessary to reduce impulsivity, improve focus and reduce instances of inattention/negative behavior within the classroom.
Sensory tools like the Senseez sensory cushions can calm children with autism, ADHD, or sensory processing disorders that need more sensory feedback or help them tolerate more sensations. While fidgets, like the Yuk-E-Ball, provide sensory feedback and tactile stimulation to help students remain calm during high-focus activities.
