My Students
We serve a culturally diverse population at HECS. Over 70% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Our school is also the 3rd most transient school within the county. While we may not have our students for a long amount of time, we want to make a big impact, during the time that we do have them. We are one of the only schools in the county, with a Farm to School program. We are also in the process of implementing Personalized Learning into our classrooms.
My Project
In an effort to make my classroom more student centered, I am working to rearrange my space to allow my students to choose the kind of seating where they learn best. Some students, specifically those with attention disorders, need the option to move while working, for these students wobble stools would be a seating option within the classroom.
My classroom environment is conducive to collaboration, communication, creativity and critical thinking.
Students simply can not carry out their tasks in rows of desks.
After researching flexible seating within the elementary classroom, some of the many benefits include burning more calories, using excess energy, increased motivation and engagement, better oxygen flow to the brain, and improvement of core strength and posture.
Students, just like adults, work best when they are in a comfortable location. The new furniture will provide students with options, other than the typical hard chair or desk. The implementation of flexible seating will allow my students the ability to get their "wiggles out" while still working on their assignments. Students who may do their best standing, kneeling or laying, will have the choice to do so.
The more choices students have, the more invested they will be inside of the classroom. When I give my students choices, I automatically have more student "buy in" and the excitement grows; therefore, the desire to learn and please is obtained. Students put in more effort this way, which leads to students being prideful of their work.
Upon receiving the generous donations for my project, I will remove all but 5-6 traditional desks from my classroom. The desks will be replaced with one to two small group tables for students to use for collaboration. While at the tables, students will be able to choose their seating preference: balls, stools or inflatable cushions.
