My Students
Most of my students I have watched grow since kindergarten. They come to me each week for art and a chance to take a break from the rigor of the regular classroom. They have struggles and challenges in their lives, but they are able to leave them behind when they enter my art room to create. They look forward to the projects and are excited to take their work back home. It makes me smile to know that I can help them use their artistic talents to find an outlet to everyday life.
My Project
Do you remember the clay pots you made in elementary school? It's almost like a rite of passage where you learn the new techniques to create a different one each year to give to your parents. My art budget is almost non-existent. I can request regular classroom supplies like paper, markers, and colored pencils, but consumable items like clay are hard to come by.
With this project, we will be using different techniques to make clay pots to decorate and take home.
The non-hardening clay will be used to learn the techniques such as pinching and rolling, and then the air drying clay will be used for the actual projects. We will let them dry, add some more style to them with paint, and spray with sealant to help them last forever.
In order for students to see how art applies to real life, we will be doing these pots when the students are learning about Earth's resources in science class. We will talk about clay and what it is made of and where it comes from while we are working with the art.
