My Students

Imagine four years of sitting in classrooms that allow minimal time for any type of art. Now imagine a room with weekly lessons that allow color to explode across a page. Which room would you want to be in?

My students are second language learners who live in a depressed neighborhood.

Their parents are working two jobs to make ends meet, or they are out looking for jobs that don't exist anymore. Parents keep them inside where it is safe, and they don't have access to art supplies to express their creative side. For seven years our school has worked hard to develop basic skills. Now that we have, we want to expose our students to art and the skills needed to create the images in their heads.

My Project

These students work hard every day to master language arts and math. They need more of an education. Some students need a way to express themselves, to explore color, to break out of a daily and predictable routine. These brushes and various paints will allow them to learn about contrasting colors and how to mix paint to get new colors. They will explore the world of cubism, pointillism, abstract painting and more. Students will learn about great artists and realize they are on the path of becoming one themselves.

Some students need a reason to stay in school.

Art is often one of those reasons. If they wait until high school to learn the basics of drawing, painting, and visual representation in multiple mediums, it will be too late. I want these students to have what most kids from good schools have, and that includes art.
