My bright, eager to learn students of Spanish are realizing the amazing opportunities open to them through the acquisition of a second language and its culture.
I am a Spanish teacher for grades 8-12 in a low-income public junior/senior high school in Pennsylvania. Nearly half of our student population receives free or reduced-price lunch.
Learning about the cultures of the world is an exciting and challenging experience. I have seen a pride my students have in themselves when they are confronted with opportunities to use their cultural knowledge in their lives both in and outside of the classroom. However, without the necessary resources students cannot fully embrace the art and the cultural practices and products of the countries being studied.
Learning about the cultures of the world is a paramount component of any foreign language education. Empowering students through art in a hands-on way creates truly culturally competent learners. With these painting supplies my students will be able to live Pablo Picasso's Guernica by creating their own painting in this style of bringing the world's attention to a cause they feel strongly about. They will be able to create art as Frida Kahlo did and put to canvas (poster board) their emotions and thoughts at that moment.
In an increasingly smaller, diverse and interconnected world cultural competence is critical for a child's future and will continue to be paramount to the success of our youth in college and beyond. It is our duty to adequately prepare them to meet the realities of our 21st century world. You will make it possible for my students to connect with these cultures through art.
