My Students
As the music teacher of the only non-audition based music school in New York City, I strive to give my students every opportunity. Our school was opened less than 15 years ago with the mission to give all students, regardless of their prior knowledge, an opportunity to learn and grow in the arts.
Over 95% of the students are of black or Hispanic heritage, and over 80% qualify for free or reduced-priced lunch.
Although many of our students' math and reading skills fall below grade level, they are intelligent, passionate, and all performers at heart.
My Project
Our school is very lucky to have 2 upright pianos for students to play daily! As a music teacher, I strive to teach students not only how to play instruments, but how to care for and maintain them.
This piano workshop will not only result in two tuned pianos, but it will give students an understanding of how pianos work, and expand the idea of what a career in music could look like.
Students who see the amount of work and effort that goes into creating a working piano will often hold a different respect for the instrument than those who haven't. It will also provide students with a hands-on technical way to work with pianos, other than performing. This day will be a hit for both under and upper classman!
