Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is located in the Fordham section of the Bronx. My students, nearly all of them children of color and from low-income households, faced many challenges before the Covid-19 crisis; now they are also navigating the pandemic and a national reckoning for racial justice. Nevertheless, throughout the months of remote learning this past Spring, my students proved to be "New York tough" - diligent, resilient, and fervent learners in the most trying of circumstances.
More than ever, we must engage these students with academic work that is rigorous and relevant to their lives, but also accessible and - dare I say - fun!
As a music teacher, I'm in a unique position to facilitate such work and I was able to elicit impressive performance from my beleaguered students this spring.
My students love music and relish opportunities to learn and perform on musical instruments. Though remote learning presents certain limitations, my students are learning how to leverage digital resources to reach their musical and academic goals.
My Project
I will purchase licenses for my students to access a cloud-based digital-audio workstation (DAW) called SoundTrap. This software was indispensable to my instruction when schooling went remote in March (it was offered for free at that time), as it facilitated a relatively seamless transition.
Students make great use of a virtual piano keyboard, virtual drum set, audio loops, chat and video conferencing, and audio recording capabilities.
These features allow for students to create music, to work collaboratively with their peers, to practice music pieces or exercises and then to record and catalog their work; it also enables me to assess student progress and give timely feedback.
As many of my students will return with remote learning, this platform will be a great boon to my students' motivation and engagement with music instruction this year.
