My students need a set of weights, pulleys and scales in order to make the study of forces come alive.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Working at a school that is primarily focused on arts, I get to spend time with many students who learn best when doing labs and activities. My students learn best by doing. My goal this year is to make science come alive for them and be something they feel tremendous success in.
The students at my school come from an amazing variety of backgrounds and interests.
HArts is a different kind of school. Our philosophy is that art, drama and dance can hook students and make them better learners.
During breaks between classes it's common to see our students dancing, singing and drawing. They have a common bond in art.
Our students have also taken a tremendous ownership or their school. They love their school and immerse themselves in service to their school.
My Project
My physics class is extremely "hands-on." I try my best to have a different activity for them to perform every day that not only teaches them the lesson but grabs their attention and keeps them moving.
These materials are going to make it possible for my students to see first hand how pulleys can multiply forces and make heavy loads easier to lift. Students will start out by creating pulley systems by copying designs from drawings. Next they will make predictions about systems that will reduce effort by varying amounts and then they will build their designs and see how they work.
This project will make learning more fun and real for my students.
It's one thing to see a bunch of drawings in a book but it's completely different when students can actually pull down a string and watch the weights rise. They can feel the difference in the amount of force they apply and the weight of the weight.
