My students need supplies to complete physics investigations. This includes a car and ramp kit, sandpaper (for friction), basketballs (action/reaction), and a pendulum.
I teach 8th grade Science at a rural middle school. We are a NASA Explorer School and are especially committed to inspiring students in science, technology, engineering, and math.
The study of motion and forces can be a very dry subject without the use of hands-on activities. Our science budget was severely reduced (along with budget cuts district-wide) this past year. Our standards are high, but we are in need of materials. My students anxious to engage in hands-on physics activities.
The requested resources will allow me to design labs that involve hands-on investigations. The students will investigate Newton's laws through the use of basketballs (Inertia, Force = Mass x Acceleration, and Action/Reaction); a pendulum, and a car and ramp set. These are materials that are intrinsically inviting to adolescents. It is so powerful that students can use these high-interest materials to investigate and excel in physics!
You will make it possible for me to design physics learning experiences that will inspire students to achieve high levels of critical thinking. By sponsoring this proposal, my NASA Explorer School students will not only study motion and forces on Earth, but will expand their thinking to hypothesize as to motion and forces on other planets.
