Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach First Grade at a school that has 78% free or reduced lunch students. The majority of the students in my class and in my school are English language learners. There is no playground equipment at my school for the primary students to use on a regular basis. Primary teachers must go and ask the physical education department for materials and most of the time there are no extras for us to use.
Most of my students do not play outside unless they are at school because they either stay in the school aftercare program or they stay at their parents' place of business after school. Last school year, a third of my class was labeled overweight. With only one playground ball that I purchased, it was difficult to keep the students engaged and active during their Physical Education time.
With the resources that this project will supply, the ratio of equipment to student will decrease from 18 students to 1, to 3 students per equipment. This will encourage cooperative play, lessen the wait time for the material for each student, and most importantly increase the amount of time the students engage in physical movement that is fun. With a lot of focus on performance on tests, we must still remember that these are young children that need to play as well as learn.
