Swimming for students with physical challenges helps build not only strength and endurance but it boosts self-esteem and confidence. It is hard for many of our students to walk and/or stand but put them in a pool and they can do many of the same things that students without physical challenges can.
My students are a wonderful, hard-working group of diverse children with physical disabilities.
Some students use wheelchairs, some use walkers and others use crutches. The group of students ranges in age from 7 to 12. The students live in the inner-city, are from low income families, and are racially diverse.
My Project
My students need 15 Back Floats to swim safely. The class goes swimming once a week for 45 minutes. There are many support staff to make sure the students are safe. Many of the students can be close to independent when they are in the water. It is amazing to see them move around independently even though they don't have the same mobility outside of the pool.
Swimming is so important for students' mobility.
It helps them move and stretch as well as allow independent movement they do not have outside the water. The floating equipment will help keep them safe and allow for freedom of movement.
The simplicity of learning to swim and having it as a pastime is a fantastic way to boost confidence, self-esteem and motivation. The materials we are requesting will allow our students to develop the confidence and skills necessary to learn how to swim.
