Physical Therapy: Movement Activities and Play!

My Project

My students are in Special Education and are primarily in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program. They have medical conditions such as Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Muscular Dystrophy, Autism, etc. As a physical therapist, I support students ability to safely access and participate in school programing alongside their peers.

Creating fun and exciting play is a great way to motivate my students to learn new movements.

Large motor movements for activities like walking, running, and jumping are often difficult for my students to perform. Making gross motor activities fun by creating obstacle courses, having a soft mat area for safe jumping, and incorporating games can increase interest and participation. The students will benefit from the resources listed by improving their balance, motor planning, coordination, endurance, development of gross motor milestones, and safety during school. Having these items will help me create a safe learning environment for gross motor development and allow these students to learn movement skills through play with peers! The equipment will be used during physical therapy services and within Early Childhood Special Education classroom - Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program. Thank you for your consideration and support!
