This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As we continue to make our curriculum engaging and relevant to our students, offering photography as a course has become one way to reach our students. Teaching them digital photography has opened up many doors and opportunities for students who were not entirely successful in their former schools.

Everyday we strive to make our curriculum relevant for our students.

In our photography courses, we do this by creating a curriculum encouraging students to explore their creative sides. Our students range in age from 16 to 21 years old who have left the traditional high school because of their lack of academic progress. The school is located in the center of Los Angeles and the majority of our students are identified as high poverty students. All of our students are at-risk because of their credit deficiencies, as many of our students arrive at our school at least 1 grade level behind. Within a semester, students who were previously viewed as failures and written off are not only passing their 5 core classes, but also earning additional credits. This year we had 47 students graduate who probably would not have graduated otherwise. This is because of the real world application.

My Project

The laminator will be used to create presentation portfolios the students present to the faculty upon completion of the course. It is from these portfolios that students are awarded credit. It is also something they are able to take with them for future use in cases such as employment opportunities and educational endeavors. The project book will be used to augment our current repertoire of project ideas for students. We like to continuously update and add to our project library in order to keep students interested and engaged in what they are studying and learning about in their photography courses.

These materials will make a difference for our students.

By having a finished project they can take with them, our students gain a sense of accomplishment that they have completed a project from start to finish. It gives them something to bring home to their families to show them that they are having success in their school, something that has not been seen in the past. It also gives them additional skills that may help them in their future endeavors.
