My Project

A vital component of our inquiry-based science program is helping students build understanding of big concepts by adding to their mental models, activity by activity, while exploring real-world applications. Although science teaching is my career, I trained to teach foreign language and English as a Second Language. I was surprised to discover that the process of building science ideas and language acquisition are very much the same! Both involve goals of communicative competence with lots of vocabulary. Students come from all over our large district to attend our school. They reflect the diverse area we live in, representing over 40 home languages and include immigrants from around the globe, refugees, and many long-term English Language Learners. ELL is one demographic our school is targeting this year to increase academic performance.

We need photogates and calculators to add to 8th grade kinematics labs.

From measuring and calculating speed, distance and acceleration to deriving the acceleration due to Earth's gravity, students will use these science tools in many labs involving motion and forces! They will build their science ideas while working in lab groups using both academic language and vocabulary as well as conversational English.

Middle school is a time of great physical, mental, and social development, and science class is the perfect setting for my young teens to engage in natural conversations as they acquire new language and ideas! Today's science students are tomorrow's inventors and stewards of the environment. To solve the issues of the future, they will need to understand science concepts and be familiar with data analysis tools such as the graphical analysis software that accompanies the photogates, use their creativity to devise solutions, and be able to communicate their ideas to implement their visions. Students develop these skills by participating in hands-on investigations in science classes!
