My Students

I teach math and science at a creative arts conservatory. As such, my students are impossible to define. I look out across the classroom and I see a splash of pink hair here, a cape flowing there, a trumpet leaned up against a lab table over in that corner, and a half-finished canvas propped up next to my desk. These outer coverings only begin to hint at the diversity of my students. We have day students from 1-2 hours drive in every direction, from every socioeconomic background, and life experience. They are curious about the world and how their art is a reflection of it and an answer to it. My pleasure is finding ways to integrate their artistic talents into math and science so that their time in my class feels like the rest of their arts training - full of creative thought and expression, inquiry, collaboration, and challenge.

My Project

We will use photogates to investigate motion such as free fall and collisions through pre-calculus concepts. We currently have 8 Vernier Dynamics Systems with which these photogates will be used (2 per track), as well as a class set of motion detectors. The precision that will be gained by incorporating photogates into our projects will allow students to more accurately analyze their data using mathematical calculations.

Access to these technologies in our classroom allows many different learners to understand difficult concepts through hands-on interactions.

We have had great success with Vernier sensors and probes in the past and I am sure that the addition of photogates will greatly enhance learning and understanding for our students.
