My Students

My students love to explore physical science in our classroom laboratory, sometimes with hair-raising results!

It is now time to explore the shocking world of static electricity, via our own, high-powered Van de Graaff generator.

But also, we aim to capture these electrifying moments by photographing and printing the results of our experiments!

This project aims to discover what my students can learn about hands-on static electricity physical science, as only the Van de Graaff generator can deliver.

Do I think this project is vital for all students in 6th and 8th grades? You bet your charged particles I do!

My Project

This project is one of those "essential missing-pieces" situations: we literally can't perform our laboratory experiments without these materials. Through past DonorsChoose projects, our Kindle Fire tablets are charged and ready to take color photographs. But having this Van de Graaff generator is really the key.

No other piece of science equipment in our repertoire will do what this generator does: charge the hair on our heads to stand straight-up, as charged particles collect at the ends of each hair.

This project is the perfect combination of art and science. We rely on the generator to provide the powerful static electricity, but we rely on our printed photographs as the proof of our data. It's energizing!
