This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Maurice Sendak said, "There's so much more to a book than just the reading." Our students are proof of that: many are able to struggle through the reading of a text, but don't have the phonics skills to break down and truly understand new or challenging words. They need serious phonics help!
My students want to be readers, but have to work hard to overcome their skills deficits.
They are high-poverty, diverse kids in a turn-around school in NE Denver. Many are learning English as a second language. Many have little or no support at home with mastering basic reading skills. They need meaningful Phonics Intervention, which my team works hard to provide from K-5.
My Project
These resources are extremely basic, but so necessary! My team of Interventionists push into classrooms to support the neediest students across grades K-5, as they work to learn basic letter sounds and combinations that make up English texts.
At the moment, we have no supplies other than the ones we have scrounged up around the building to teach with. Broken pencils with no erasers, scraps of copy paper, one communal pencil sharpener that shreds pencils to bits...these are not the tools that students want to be using when they are in small groups, or at all! Our students want and deserve materials that are functional. Unfortunately, our school is not able to provide any supplies, and our students' families are not able to spare the money to buy any.
The pencils, erasers, grips, and notebooks I am requesting would be used daily as students work to practice reading and writing basic sounds through phonics lessons, spelling work, and grammar lessons.
The simple act of providing basic writing tools for us to use in phonics class will powerfully effect our students and how they feel about applying themselves in class.
Being able to use new pencils (sharp pencils!) that support their grip needs, with actual erasers so they can clean up errors and mistakes on lovely colored lined paper will truly motivate students to try their best to learn the skills they need to be successful in reading, and in life. Thank you for considering our project.
