This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My special needs students are Autistic and therefore greatly benefit from learning through their senses. This project will focus on exposing my students to phonics through their senses.
Many of my students struggle with hand-eye coordination due to binocular vision dysfunction.
They also struggle with the condition called Strabismus, which prohibits them from focusing on an object in front of them.
Due to these ocular challenges, it's very important that I provide them with activities that strengthen their visual skills and hand-eye coordination. This phonics center will do just that, by providing hands on sensory-driven activities with bright colors that will attract their eyes and hopefully strengthen the neural connections between their brain, hands and eyes.
My goal with this center is to provide "fun" phonics-based learning activities for my students that are fun and engaging (so they won't even realize they're learning). My autistic students are special because they face so many challenges throughout each and every day, and they deserve centers at school that are fun and engaging.
