My Students

The students at my school are an energetic and hardworking group of children. They enjoy coming to school, but school funding cuts over the years have impacted what schools can provide to individual classrooms.

I teach students with special needs in an urban neighborhood where all the students at school are eligible for free breakfast and free lunch.

Our school has hard-working students, as well as teachers and staff, who strive to make our school a welcoming and inviting place. In addition, our school is one of the top-performing schools in the city.

My Project

My district will resume in person normal school operations after being completely virtual and then hybrid (with very few in person children) for the past 18 months. At the end of August, we will welcome back students. I am a special education teacher and work with students outside of their classroom. I have been researching and reading about the science of reading and utilize many strategies with my students.

Sound walls would benefit my students and help them learn sounds as well as the letter combinations that make the sounds.

Reading difficulties in children are often due to poor phonics knowledge and the ability to sound out unfamiliar word parts. The resources I am requesting will help reinforce phonics, particularly helping students connect sounds with letters. The big, bright pictures on the sound wall cards benefit visual learners. I am also requesting early reader books so that students can use their knowledge of phonics to decode words in simple books.
