I have 24 students in my class. 13 of them are reading below grade level. The reading levels in my room range from Kindergarten to 5th grade. The students reading below grade level have missed out on important phonics skills and good basic reading instruction.
I see 24 pieces of "swiss cheese" in my room!
I'm trying to fill in the holes of missed instruction over the last few years. I have enlisted the help of mom and grandma volunteers to come read and play reading games with my students. These reading games and materials will me and my volunteers reach each child's individual reading goals.
We use the Literacy First Phonics Continuum to track students progress through the phonics skills. Thirteen of my students need small group and one on one phonics instruction. The Magnetic Phonics Tiles and Touch Read Phonics from Lakeshore will help facilitate this important phonics instruction. My goal is to help my 13 below level readers progress and reach Second Grade Level in Reading. We test these skills with the STAR Reading Assessments, DRA Reading Assessment, and the Literacy First Phonics Continuum.
