This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Teaching phonics in kindergarten is powerful because it lays the foundation for reading and writing. By explicitly teaching the relationships between letters and sounds, phonics helps young learners decode words, recognize patterns, and build fluency.

For kindergarteners, many of whom enter school with limited language skills, phonics instruction is essential in developing phonemic awareness—the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate sounds in words.

This skill is a predictor of future reading success.

Phonics instruction also supports vocabulary development, spelling, and comprehension. When children understand how sounds connect to letters, they gain confidence in reading and writing, which fosters a love for learning. For students with little prior exposure to books or English, phonics provides a structured and systematic approach that bridges language gaps, ensuring all children have access to literacy skills early on.

Additionally, engaging multisensory phonics activities—such as movement, songs, and these hands-on materials—help make learning meaningful and accessible, especially for students who need strong Tier 1 instruction. By integrating phonics into daily routines, teachers empower students with the tools to become independent readers, setting them up for long-term academic success
