My Project
4 Schools. 52 Teachers. Over 250 Students. 95% of Students reading by 3rd Grade. A day in the life of a Reading & Data Specialist.
Reading is not a privilege - it is a Right for each and every child - to learn how to read by 3rd Grade.
In order for students to be given the best instruction in how to learn how to read, many teachers need to be shown how to teach it. PHONICS ON THE MOVE will provide that opportunity for teachers to watch me teach a lesson to their students in their classrooms.
The Science of Reading has proven that Phonics, alone, is not an adequate skill to equip students to be good comprehenders. Phonemic Awareness (sounds), Vocabulary (meaning of words), Fluency (sounds like talking) along with Phonics (sounds associated to letter) is necessary for Reading Comprehension. However, Reading Comprehension WILL NOT have a chance if explicit (intentional) and systematic (organized and complete) Phonics instruction does not happen. So while Phonics is not the only ingredient necessary to devour a good book - without it, there is no nutritional value.
PHONICS ON THE MOVE to the rescue! With this portable, rolling dry erase board, individual boards for students to be actively involved, markers, erasers and an interactive alphabet, instruction will be visual (seeing the letters), kinesthetic (writing the letters), and auditory (saying the sounds). I can transport and utilize this project in each school with ease. The teaching opportunities are endless.
