This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is a Title One school. A very high percentage the students live in poverty. They come to school with anxiety, hunger, and distractions. In school, however, they flourish. The pandemic has had a big impact on our students. Many have not been in school since the last quarter of their Kindergarten year. This is a critical time in a young readers development. I would love to help close some of those foundations skills gaps with some “old school” phonics materials.
My Project
We have been so excited to welcome students back to school this year. Now it is time to make up for the time lost during the pandemic. Help us fill in those gaps with tried and true solid foundational phonics materials! A word family pocket charts, and a cart to make it portable, would help us regain some of those skills that have been missed. Research has shown that a student's ability to decode words is closely linked to their ability to read higher level texts. These materials would help to advance those skills.
