My Students
All of my students are early emergent readers and need lots of support and guidance.
I am teaching a kindergarten/first grade combination class for the first time this year.
I have 12 Ks and 12 first graders. They are bright and eager to learn and participate. I have 4 children who speak Spanish at home and several who receive free or reduced lunch. My new class of kids is the best. I love being with them every day and want them to make as much growth as possible this year.
My Project
As a combo class, I have my work cut out for me in reading instruction. My students are at different levels with different needs. A variety of different materials are required to make the most of our time together each day. To help my students learn to read, I have requested small group reading kits that have different passages – both fiction and nonfiction – and follow-up activities to do with the passages. The kit has materials at different levels to help me address the needs of all my readers. The other resource that I have requested is a set of language skills partner games. These games will allow them to practice phonics, sight words, and vocabulary building skills. All of these things will help improve reading for my students.
This project is important to me and my students because we have a big job ahead of us.
I have less than 180 days to get them as far as I can in reading. These materials will help us practice skills and learn new skills toward that goal. I want my class to love to come to school, and one way to get that to happen is by offering games as practice rather than pencil/paper activities.
