Help me give my students the tools they need to sharpen their phonics, reading and writing skills in a fun and interactive way during school hours and in our ELL afterschool program. This includes fidget toys, books, and other items.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This is my first year as an ELL teacher and I have a great group of hard working ELL students. They always give 110% on every lesson and I am lucky to get to see a few of them after school for extra phonics and reading supports.
My Project
As our year has progressed we are noticing that many of our younger students’ reading and phonics skills were severely effected due to COVID and not having access to in person learning. Our school is offering many intervention supports to build foundational skills in phonics and reading comprehension across all grade levels. I am one of two ELL teachers and I have been supporting my 2nd grade and 4th grade students (over 40 students between these two grades) with building foundational skills as well as meeting with some of them after school to provide extra support.
The materials on my list would help me with planning time and ensuring that students are engaged and practicing the skills we are learning in class.
I love to teach and have my students practice through games it has proven effective. I plan to also use these supplies after school in my ELL HUGS program. I know that these games will help us with independent practice as I work with students 1 to 1 to sharpen individual skills. Lastly, I love to read and want to pass that passion on to my students, but, I don't have many books for my older students in my classroom. This fall I worked our book fair and was able to purchase 8 books, and my 4-8th graders love them but there are not enough books for the amount of students I have in each class. So I added some popular books so I can have doubles in my classroom and students can continue to read, summarize and practice their reading comprehension and writing skills to a book of their preference.
