My Students
Help make phonics interesting and exciting in first grade!
My students are wonderful!
Most of my students live within a few blocks of the school, a very diverse neighborhood, containing large African American, Asian American, Hispanic, and Caucasian populations. My school is a Title I school, and many of my students live in poverty. At least two have gang members in their family, and some have parents in prison. Some of my students have two parents, some have one, and some live with grandparents. Some of my students have many books at home, and some have no books at all. Almost half of my students are English language learners, two have individual education plans, and one student from an emotionally and behaviorally disturbed classroom comes to my class for reading.
My Project
Last year, my students spent two hours each week learning phonics and comprehension skills using reading centers to supplement our school's reading program. Most students had a great time, and the children who were engaged spent long periods of time working on a reading activity. However, I did not have enough activities at each student's level to keep everyone learning during the entire time. My classroom now has amazing centers focused on comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and sight words, but we need phonics centers to learn how to read. The centers I am requesting are fun, engaging, help students to cement skills at a variety of levels, and are especially helpful for English language learners. These materials would help my students to segment and build sounds quickly and would make a big difference for my students' learning.
If you choose to donate to this project, first graders will have a variety of reading centers supporting learning phonics.
Each student will be able to learn skills that are appropriate to him or her individually.
