This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Can you read this sentence? Most of my students cannot, and they are in THIRD grade! I teach an SEI (Structured English Immersion) class, and the majority of my students have been in school for less than two years. They are sweet students, but due to circumstances beyond their control (e.g., poverty, homelessness, residency/immigration issues), they have not been given an opportunity to play on a level playing field with many of their peers.
My students have been working hard to develop their English language skills. Most of them are able to communicate fairly well with me, their non-Spanish speaking maestra. Since they now have a pretty good mastery of spoken English, they need to begin reading and writing it. They need written practice everyday.
My lovable little students need a consumable phonics workbook in which they can practice sounds and letters on a daily basis. It is so important to provide them with both instruction and practice in phonics in an organized, sequential manner. The Modern Curriculum Press phonics books are the best books I've found. I used them years ago in my teaching, and I don't think they can be beat.
This is your chance to really make a meaningful difference in the lives of children. These phonics books could be so powerful and effective that they may be a stepping stone to so many other great things. When a child knows how to read, doors open everywhere.
