This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a resource teacher at a school that is located in the Bronx. The students that I service have learning difficulties. These students are given resource as a last resort before going into a smaller special education 12:1 class. I service students who come with no reading skills and phonemic awarness. They don't hear the sounds in simple three letter words. It is my job to teach them to listen to the sounds in words by breaking down the words and putting them together again. Last year when I was teaching phonemic awarness I was noticing that when I had hands on objects to represent the words, my children were more enthusiastic and engaged in the activity. Most of my students lack simple vocabulary and because of that they can not realate to some of the words that I needed to teach them. I saw some great products that I could use to help me teach phonemic awarness.
One product is called Match-A-Sound! Phonemic Awareness Boxes
It includes activity boxes that are overflowing with kid-pleasing manipulatives that make language learning lots of fun! Each box features 30 cute manipulatives and 10 colorful activity mats that focus on beginning, ending or rhyming sounds. To complete each mat, kids search for 3 objects that have the same sound pictured on the mat?like matching a cat, a rat and a bat to the picture of a hat!
These boxes target the following skills
1. Isolating & substituting phonemes
2. Phoneme identification
3. Recognizing rhyming patterns
The second product that I saw is called Listen & Learn Phonemic Awareness Activity Program
It is a listening program that allows kids to follow step-by-step lessons to build phonemic awareness?in an involving, interactive way! This ready-to-use program has enough materials for 8 students at once, including 128 write & wipe activity cards?plus 4 CDs that present 16 different activities. It comes with 8 write & wipe markers, 125 plastic chips and a guide?all in a tabbed storage box.
This product targets the following skills:
1. Phoneme substitution
2. Listening and following directions
3.Identifying and manipulating sounds
