My Students
Reading can take us places we may otherwise never be able to go! Research suggests that Phonemic Awareness is related to success in learning to read. "Children who lack Phonemic Awareness are likely to become among our poorest readers." (Blackman 2000)
I teach 5 year-old Kindergarten in rural South Carolina.
My students are bright and inquisitive. We are a Title One school with 93% of Kindergarten students receiving free/reduced lunch. Our school was featured on South Carolina's ETV's "Corridor of Shame." All of our funds for this school year have been frozen."
My Project
I would love to flood my classroom with opportunities for my students to explore the sounds of language by providing a phonemically rich environment. Adding hands-on opportunities for my students to develop Phonemic Awareness through manipulation in learning centers would greatly increase my students exposure to these sounds. Students who struggle with Phonemic Awareness need many more opportunities for this exposure to help them learn to read!
I would like to provide Phonemic Awareness opportunities for my students to help them share my love for reading.
In the homes of many of my students reading is not modeled or encouraged at this age. I would like to provide this fundamental necessity and to help my students become lifelong readers.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
