This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Mr. Rogers once said, "Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children, play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood." I want to ensure that my students, in our highly standardized, high-stakes school environment have the chance to play!
My students want to be readers, but have to work hard to overcome their skill deficits.
They are high-poverty, diverse kids in a turn-around school in NE Denver. Many are learning English as a second language. Many have little or no support at home with mastering basic reading skills. They need targeted Phonics Intervention, which my team works hard to provide from K-5 in a fun and motivating way that is also highly rigorous.
My Project
These resources would be used by my team of Interventionists who push into my classroom to deliver targeted, often remedial Phonics lessons to below-level readers. The work is hard, repetitive, and demanding on both teachers and students. One thing we have learned this year, however, is that if kids get a chance to show what they know, they can really champion their own learning. We want to provide our students with interactive, hands-on ways to apply their new Phonics skills so that they demonstrate their learning, challenge each other, and are continually motivated by play and competition to learn even more.
These games and activities all directly reinforce our Common Core standards, the goals of our Interventions program, and the academic and social needs of our hard-working students.
These wonderful kids deserve a little play in their demanding school day, and why not learn to play with the very letters and words they have to work with anyways? Please consider supporting this project to help liven up our Phonics lessons for some of our most challenged readers. Thank you!
