My Students
The Phenomenal Book Club and Mentoring Program is a vision that has been with me for a long time. My grand-father was only able to get a third grade education, so he made sure that his daughter, my mother could read and loved to and she imposed her love of reading on me, because of that, promoting
My students in the book club are currently many of the students that I teach intensive reading too.
Most of them have never read an entire book until they meet me and had the opportunity to be in my class or in my club. They are a group of phenomenal young women, who give the chance will do great things in this world. They are learning the concepts of respect, personal responsibility and sisterhood. Many of the young ladies come from single parent households and have a low socioeconomic status. Many of them have never read an entire book and do not read on grade level. The level of students in the club are 10-12. They are dedicated the club and come regularly. There status of poverty does not mean they are bankrupt of charter and social responsibility. I am seeking this book speak to let them know through reading, that their voices need to be heard.
My Project
The impact of students reading has far reaching effects. Illiteracy is rampant in this community, this leads to hopelessness, crime, disparity and a cycle of poverty. When students engage in reading, they are able to get a mental view of how others live, and how the world is bigger than just their neighborhoods. So far, the book club has been beneficial in helping students pass, their ACT, Florida Comprehension Assessment test and has increased their class performance. Our club focuses on mentoring to middle school girls, and becoming mentors to them and their reading buddies. This helps foster a "pay it forward" concept and strengthens their community through reading and collaboration. We need books, we cannot be successful without them. We need twenty of the book Speak by Laurie Anderson. We are talking about having a voice and this book is perfect for our club's theme next month.
This project is close to my heart because of my grand-father, Nehemiah Mabry, who only had a third grade education because African-Americans could not go to school where he lived.
He taught himself to read the Bible and being a janitor at the elementary school where he worked, he gave my mom discarded books to read so, she would be well equipped for school. She cultivated that gift and bestowed it to my sister and I. I want someone else to have the same opportunity that my grand-father did not.
