Our school is a Title I school serving students in 3K through 5th grade. Being a school in a low socio-economic community, many students don’t have access to books until they reach our classrooms. We would like to reward them with a book of their own to take home. Each student in our school will set a reading goal for the school year. Students will be rewarded throughout the year with a new book. Our school would like to give them a variety of additional reading choices to motivate them to meet their goals.
We would like to purchase a book vending machine to help motivate students to keep reading.
Students will receive book vending tokens to reward them along the way as they meet their goals. Our goal for this project is to have an opportunity for students to choose their own book while also rewarding them and encouraging the love of reading.
In a recent survey found on Bookvending.com, an overwhelming majority of schools questioned agreed that the book vending machine got students excited about reading. Over 98% of schools that purchased the book vending machine still use it regularly.
The books in the vending machine will be rewards for students when they meet their reading and/or positive behavior goals throughout the year. Books in the vending machine will include books chosen for our students and their diverse interests. The books will be chosen by the child and taken home to add to their own library. Our hope is that having books at home will promote the love of literacy, learning and teaching character education to the whole family.
At PES, we believe that providing our students with this unique way to choose a book will motivate them and get them excited about literacy and learning!
